Why Now is the Best Time to Get an HVAC Job
When your furnace breaks down in the dead of winter or you come home to a broken fridge filled of spoiled food, the technician who comes out to get your appliances back in order is a lifesaver. HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) jobs are in very high demand. This field isn’t just limited to fixing air conditioners but rather existing in a variety of fields such as sales, production, administrative support, and engineering, offering plenty of opportunities for HVAC professionals with diverse skill sets.
An industry that’s essential to our comfortable way of life is experiencing an almost unprecedented labor shortage according to the September 2015 reports by the HVACR Workplace Development Foundation. There were over 220,000 HVAC job openings in this field last year alone and the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that the number of jobs will increase by 21% though 2022. Unlike the oil and gas industry where opportunities for employment are located in certain segments of the country, HVAC jobs are are found all over the country in record numbers. And, unlike many skilled occupations, these jobs cannot be outsourced.
Between the decline in students not enrolled in HVACR training programs and their teachers retiring, there simply aren’t enough workers to meet this demand. “HVACR programs in the United States and Canada are seeking new students, from recent high school graduates to veteran or second-career adults,” said Kari M. Arfstrom, Executive Director of the WDF in an interview with ACHRNEWS. “With HVACR certifications or an associate’s degree, new employees can be assured of a solid middle class job that cannot be off-shored, is high-tech, and offers better-than-average pay.” Refrigeration, broadcast and neurodiagnostic technicians are among the top HVACR jobs that are the hardest fill.
Whether you are looking for an exciting new career or a seasoned worker, now is definitely the time to get an HVAC job.
