Braving the Chill: Labor Finders’ 7 Essential Tips For Cold Weather Work Safety

December 11, 2023

PALM BEACH GARDENS, FL— It is not officially winter yet, but for much of the country, the autumn chill has given way to a wintery blast of frigid air which can make being outdoors for an extended period of time a safety hazard. While the old motto “safety first” is a commonly held expression across a variety of industries, “Worker Safety” is a core value for Labor Finders International. Throughout 2023, Labor Finders has redoubled its efforts towards ensuring worker safety, launching numerous programs and initiatives to provide tools and resources to continue to build a culture of safety throughout the organization, as well as among their thousands of temporary associates and their valued clients they service from nearly 200 offices nationwide. In preparation for colder weather, Labor Finders recently launched the Staying Safe During Cold Weather initiative as the latest addition to this ongoing safety campaign.

Participating Labor Finders offices have begun to distribute thousands of cold weather safety kits, including cold weather accessories and gear, to a number of temporary associates with outdoor assignments facing wintry conditions, meant to augment their own preparation.  As an essential component of these well-received, limited-edition kits, Labor Finders has also complied a short list of 7 Cold Weather Safety Tips for anyone spending time outside during cold weather conditions, and they would like to help to spread this message as far and wide as possible.  These tips are as follows:

1)    Check weather reports frequently.
2)    Protect your extremities: Wear gloves, boots, and cover your head.
3)    Dress in layers. Stay dry. Moisture increases heat loss.
4)    Keep moving. This will help warm you by generating body heat.
5)    Be aware of icy or snowy patches.
6)    Take frequent breaks in warm, non-windy, dry areas.
7)    Monitor cold stress symptoms: reddening skin, pain, swelling, cramps, numbness.

While these safety tips were developed for people who spend time working outdoors, they are certainly applicable for anyone who will spend time outdoors during cold weather months, whether for work, recreation, simply walking to and from their vehicles, etc. Remembering these simple tips can help us all to stay safe and warm during the winter season.
